Jesus Did Not Change God’s Mind About You

Jesus Did Not Change God’s Mind About You

This is the second article in a series based on my book The Guilty Soul’s Guide to Grace. This article is based on chapter 5.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)

This passage tells us something profoundly important about God. God loves us deeply, and he always has. Jesus was and is the expression of God’s continual love for us. God dearly loved us before Jesus came to die to cleanse us of our sins. In fact, God was the initiator of Jesus’ sacrifice: God sent his Son here so that we might be saved, and Jesus went willingly to the cross to fulfill his Father’s desire.

The apostle John writes more about this:

This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. (1 John 4:9)

Jesus did not come into the world to change God’s mind about us. God wasn’t angry with us or eager to condemn us. Jesus did not come to earth to convince God to forgive and save us. Rather, Jesus’ sacrifice shows us how dearly God has always loved us. God loved us so much that he was willing to send his beloved Son to pay for ourforgiveness and give us eternal life. And Jesus demonstrated his deep love for God and for us by sacrificing his life.

We can therefore experience tremendous joy and peace knowing how deeply we are loved by both God and Jesus. As John wrote,

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! (1 John 3:1)

Brothers and sisters, let us rejoice in God’s lavish love, and let us approach our Father with confidence!
