Our Love for One Another Is a Light to the World

Our Love for One Another Is a Light to the World

Jesus called us to be “the light of the world,” “a city set on a hill,” and “fishers of men”—all different ways of saying we should show others the love of God and help to bring them into a relationship with Him. How does our love for each other inspire people come to know God?

  1. Our love for one another is a bright light reflecting God’s love in this world.

In John 13, Jesus tells us that we can influence others by loving one another:

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:34-35)

When people see our love for each other, it points them back to Jesus.

  1. Our unity shows people God’s love through Jesus.

In the prayer below, Jesus asks God to help us be united with each other:

“My prayer is not for them alone, but I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.” (John 17: 20-23)

As people are inspired by our love and unity, they will become more open to letting us assist them in their faith and growth. And this is one way God uses us to help others to become Christians!

  1. Our love for one another gives other people a taste of the way God loves them.

We love because [God] first loved us. Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister. (1 John 4:19-21)

We love other people because God first loved us. When we love one another, we are simply sharing some of the love God has given to us with others. Some people can’t understand how much God loves them until they first experience his love through another person. Our love shows this world that He profoundly loves them!

Brothers and sisters, may these scriptures and truths inspire us to love one another so that others may come to see that God not only loved Jesus, but that He also loves us all. Perhaps one day they may be motivated to become Jesus’ disciples!
