The Help We Need in Trials and Temptations

The Help We Need in Trials and Temptations

As disciples of Jesus, we strive to honor him in all we do, but we all fall short at times. We face many trials and temptations even after we become Christians. One of the most gracious blessings we receive from God and Jesus is strength and help in facing our trials and temptations. They don’t just give us help and forgiveness of sins when we are baptized, but they also give us continual help in overcoming our ongoing struggles throughout our lives. They are loving and helpful to us as we face weaknesses and temptations.

The Hebrew writer tells us that Jesus understands what it feels like to be tempted:

“For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.” (Hebrews 2:17-18)

We know that Jesus was perfect, but sometimes we forget that he battled temptation just as we do! He understands how difficult it can be to resist sin. Brothers and sisters, we can be confident that the grace we originally received from God at our baptism stays with us throughout our lives! During Jesus’ days on earth, endured challenges like ours, and so he is graciously and wisely able to help us to overcome our own difficulties.

The passage below confirms this:

“Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” (Hebrews 4:14-16)

Because Jesus was tempted just as we are, he can help us when we are tempted, and he is willing and able to help us to overcome.  We sometimes feel discouraged and guilty because of our trials and weaknesses, but God and Jesus are eager to graciously assist us. Brothers and sisters, let’s be encouraged, knowing that God and Jesus are amazingly helpful to us in any trials we face.

As disciples of Christ who have been reborn and saved, let’s also be assured that God’s love and grace will sustain us throughout our lives! We can be continually confident and joyful in Christ even as we face trials and temptations!
