The Power of Love

The Power of Love

This is the third in a series of encouraging articles about “The Blessings and Joy We Receive from God and Jesus.”

One of my favorite songs from the 1980s was “The Power of Love” by Huey Lewis and the News. Love is truly powerful, and one of the greatest blessings and joys we receive from God is the ability to give and receive love from others.

Jesus spoke often about the love we should have for one another, including this command he gave to his disciples just before his arrest:

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:34-35)

Our love for one another shows people that we are true disciples of Jesus, and our love can inspire them to learn about the amazing life of Jesus Christ. Therefore, brothers and sisters, let us love one another in our local churches and in all of God’s kingdom so that others can see the love of Jesus shining through us.

Jesus’ love should inspire us to love one another sacrificially and humbly—the same way Jesus loved us:

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.”  (John 9:9-13)

What a privilege it is to share the love we have received from God and Jesus with others. We are to love each other as Jesus has loved us. We are able to love other people in this way because we have been profoundly loved by God. And Jesus says that when we obey his commands to love and give, we will be filled with joy!

Brothers and sisters, let us seek to understand and accept the wonderful love of God and Jesus, and to deeply love others as well!
