Love for Our Families

Love for Our Families

This is the fourth in a series of encouraging articles about The Blessings and Joy We Receive from God and Jesus.

Jesus encourages us to love one another as God has loved him, and as he loved us:

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.” (John 15:9-12)

The love of God and Jesus for us is an amazing blessing in our lives. As we love one another, it will bring us awesome joy!

In the following passage, we see how husbands and wives are called to love and respect one another:

“However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.”  (Ephesians 5:33)

Husbands, think about all the different ways you love yourself: You make sure that your needs are met physically, emotionally, spiritually, and financially. You seek comfort and joy in your life. If we are to love our wives as we love ourselves, how much more should we offer that kind of loving care to our wives! As husbands and wives both offer love and respect to each other, we find great joy in our marriages.

When husbands and wives love one another according to God’s plan, this gives our children a great sense of security, peace, joy, and love. As they grow, our children will see that the love we have for one another comes from God, and this will help them to trust and pursue God for themselves. The more they understand the amazing love of God and Jesus for them, the more likely they are to follow God’s ways and become disciples of Jesus themselves.

I have seen these truths at work powerfully in my own family. God’s love taught me many things: how to love and respect my wife, how to love and lead my children, and how to not allow the burdens of my work to distract me from my family. What a blessing my family has been, and what a joy it is even now to experience closeness as a family united in Christ. Brothers and sisters, let us enjoy and share the amazing love of God and Jesus!
