The Wonderful Power Of Music, Singing & Worship

The Wonderful Power Of Music, Singing & Worship

How God uses music in our hearts, minds and voices to fill us with peace, joy and the Holy Spirit

Worship, music and singing are some of the most powerful ways God will use to bring his glorious and pleasant truths alive within us. It frees our minds, hearts and emotions by filling us with the Holy Spirit in a special way! When we embrace it, we will be blessed beyond measure. When we are discouraged, anxious, or even depressed, music, singing and worship can turn us around!

Let’s learn from David, the Man After the Heart of God:

Rejoice in the LORD and be glad, you righteous;

sing, all you who are upright in heart! Psalm 32:11

Praise the LORD, for the LORD is good;

sing praise to his name, for that is pleasant. Psalm 135:3

Praise the LORD.

How good it is to sing praises to our God,

how pleasant and fitting to praise him! Psalm 147:1

Folks, singing and worship pleases God, to be sure. But who else does it please? Who else does it make happy and glad? Us!  When we embrace music, focusing on the goodness, greatness and love of God, it brings joy and pleasure to us by filling our minds and hearts with the truths of the nature of our God. And it does so in a way that nothing else does. Yes, we need to hear preaching and teaching. Yes, we need to study the Bible and meditate upon it ourselves. Yes, we need to pray. All of those things will do great things within us also. But music and worship will do special things, moving us emotionally, mentally and spiritually in a glorious fashion.

As born again disciples, we all have been given the Holy Spirit, but God says we not only need to receive it, we need to let it fill us. How can we do that? Here is what God says to do:

Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 5:18-20

How can we allow music to fill us with the Holy Spirit? Here are some practical steps we can take:

  • Sing from the heart with other disciples in times of worship
  • Sing spiritual songs on our own – just between us and God
  • As we go about our day, we can listen to recorded spiritual music, and either sing aloud with it, or just let it flow into our minds and hearts. When we do, it will inspire, comfort and renew our hearts and minds.

To learn more about how to go about this, please read the chapter from The Warrior Workbook based on the example and teaching of David, the man after the heart of God. It will help us all be more joyful, more at peace, and more filled with the Holy Spirit!
